Meet the Clergy

Rabbi Jacob Herber is the spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Israel in Glendale, Wisconsin, the Milwaukee area’s only Conservative congregation affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.

He was born in New York City and raised in Beacon, New York and Rancho Cordova, CA. Rabbi Herber is a cum laude graduate of the University of California, Davis and was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.

He serves on the Nominations Committee of the Rabbinical Assembly and the Boards of Directors of the National Rabbinic Cabinet of State of Israel Bonds, Masorti Olami, the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, and is a member of the Auxiliary Board of the Milwaukee Jewish Free Loan Association. Rabbi Herber is the immediate Past President of the Wisconsin Council of Rabbis, Chaplain Emeritus of the Shomrim Society of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley, and a former Chaplain of the Philadelphia Police Department.

In July 2008 Rabbi Herber traveled to Uganda with other leading Conservative Rabbis to supervise the conversion of over 200 members of the Abayudaya community. Rabbi Herber’s work in promoting interfaith dialogue has taken him from the United States to Mexico, Germany and Poland. Rabbi Herber is a recipient of the Jewish National Fund’s Service Award (2009). He is also a contributing author of the book, Walking With Life published in July 2009 by the American Jewish University. Rabbi Herber is currently a Rabbinic Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute.

Rabbi Herber and his wife, Cynthia, and blessed with two children, Mychal and Adin, who attend the Milwaukee Jewish Day School In his spare time, Rabbi Herber races competitively for the ISCorp Cycling Team and roots for the New York Yankees, New York Rangers and the English Premier League’s Chelsea Football Club.



SteinPhoto3FaceOnly.JPGHazzan Jeremy Stein joined Congregation Beth Israel in July of 2009. He recently graduated from the H. L. Miller Cantorial School and College of Jewish Music at the Jewish Theological Seminary.

 

A native of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, he studied flute and arranging at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating, he toured with his jazz/rock band Flutopia.In addition to performing with his band, Hazzan Stein played on film scores, composed radio jingles, and performed at countless Jewish weddings. He recently made his Carnegie Hall debut, singing with The Zamir Choral Foundation and sharing the stage with perennial Jewish performers Theodore Bikel and Debbie Friedman. For the past several summers, Hazzan Stein has served as Rosh Shira at Camp Ramah in New England.

 

Hazzan Stein´s life has been defined by music: from singing and playing to performing on stage, his melodic voice and love of Judaism complement each other, enriching our congregation with music and ruach.
